About: Our observation principles

Snapshotshowsortjungl is an independent editorial project for people who watch and photograph wildlife slowly. We take no payment for reserve or gear recommendations.

Why we write

Welfare before the frame

Wildlife photography has never been more popular, and the pressure on animals has grown with it: vehicles crowding cheetahs, drones over nesting colonies, baited owls posed on fence posts. We believe the photograph is only worth having if the animal was left as it was found.

Our guides draw on published codes such as the ABA Code of Birding Ethics, the Audubon Guide to Ethical Bird Photography and the principles of ethical field practice set out by the North American Nature Photography Association, alongside park regulations and field experience.

Principles

Six commitments

One

Behaviour is the boundary

If an animal reacts to us, we are too close, whatever the rules allow.

Two

No baiting or playback

We do not publish images made with lures, calls or staged setups.

Three

Sensitive locations stay private

No nest, den or rhino coordinates, ever.

Four

Independent recommendations

No sponsored rankings, affiliate deals or paid placements.

Five

Local knowledge first

We defer to reserve authorities and licensed local guides.

Six

Corrections welcome

Seasons and rules change. Tell us via the field desk and we will update.
